James Frey had to lie?

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

This is a serious question that you might have asked yourself. Whatever you listen or read from a “born again Christian” – can you trust him for what he says? The Christians call it “testimony”, a new born experience with Jesus, and others call it a bogus idea to convert others. “I was a sinner, now I’m born again.”, you might have heard such kind of statements already. Then there are stories of guys addicted to drugs, alcohol and cigarettes – one fine day they get a sense of security that they are born again.

What would you do, when your child comes to you to tell you that he has fever, and does not want to go to school? You may not take him to a doctor unless he is serious, and you lose a chance to prove – is he telling the truth. This is the case with many who claim to be born again Christians. You don’t ask these past drug addicts, do they have a clean certificate from a rehabilitation specialist – you simply fall prey to whatever they say. The Christians of this time are vulnerable to “testimony scams”. The reasons are many, primarily who does not fear to question the leaders, who claim God is on their side?

Now, have you every thought, you would be a victim by a non-Christian writer. I was following the stories on James Frey’s a million pieces memoir. I had interest in his memoir, to read his experiences, and how did he clean up his acts. Before I was going too far, I read what the Smoking Gun has to say about his experience. Was it more than “duped” as Oprah Winfrey felt?

I think James Frey has been habitually lying for long time. Did he do it intentionally? May be, may be not. The worst fear he had might be how he was going to sell his books if he had said he spent only 86 hours at the prison – if that’s not a good assumption, then he might have had a blackout of the whole incident. I would call his book a fiction, and a good writing. Leave the lie behind, the million dollar question to ask now is, is James Frey willing to change, and tell the story with an honest heart. I think he is a good writer, and his writings will resonate better among the readers if he tells his memoir in ultimate truth.

I used to believe the “so called” born again preachers, and their stories true, but not any more. They exaggerate their experience similar to the problem James Frey’s book readers had. Being a Christian sitting at a Church bench, listening to the “born again experience” of the new visiting Evangelist, you don’t have a choice but to simply trust whatever the Evangelist say. Can you fix these new born Evangelists?

Did HP see my blog – I don’t doubt. Sarah from the HP office called me, gave her personal fax number, and asked me to fax the original receipt. She might fix the warranty problem, but let’s see.

This is the worst purchase experience I ever had. I bought a HP Pavillion laptop in 2004 November. The battery stopped working in 2005 July. In a hurry to get it fixed, before leaving for India, I called the HP customer service. Click! Click! Click! Being in the US for some years, had not heard this kind of poor voice quality, and with a prior experience with the MSN customer support in India, I concluded that my call was going to India.

A gentleman came to the line told me “I’m Ron. Can I help you?” As a guy pounded with an iron rod on the head, I asked myself “Why this Indian guy saying an American name?” Out of curiosity, I asked him “Is Ron your real name – or something else like Ramaswammy?” He did not lie, he told me his name is Ajith, and he is in Coimbature, India. Mr.Ajith was a smart guy fixing my laptop battery problem, but he dismayed me when he said my laptop warranty is going to expire within another 16 days, so I have to get an extended warranty. “What? How come the warranty is going to expire before a year is completed? I purchased the laptop only in November, 2004 and should this laptop have a year of warranty?” I told Mr.Ajith. Mr.Ajith tested my patience for a while and told me “I’m unable to help you regarding your warranty. Ours is a Technical Support center in India, so I will transfer to the Warranty Department”. He transferred the line to some office in the US. A lady came on the line asked me the case number, I gave the case number, then she said she can’t help me because I purchased the laptop from HP Shopping not from their office. She gave me another 800 number, where I spoke to another lady who told me I have to fax the original purchase slip to a fax machine. Finally relieved, faxed the original purchase slip to her office, also sent an email to hp.pop@mail.support.com.

I got back from India, called the HP office to find out the warranty status. The same answer from my Indian Friend who sits in India, this time it is from Reghu from Madras. Was he new? He called his supervisor to help me out. The supervisor promised me that he would help me unto my satisfaction. He started from the scratch, and I started telling my laptop buying story. After talking to him for few minutes, I knew what he was going to do, that is to transfer the line to a Warranty office, I told him out of some anguish “Fix It”, and disconnected the line.

In January 2006, I called again the HP Office to enquire my laptop warranty status. This time a “Frank” from costa rica took my call. I had pity on him as he tried to read the script, and after he read out some mistakes from the script, I felt like he is still learning, but he was cool to talk. He told me he is going to transfer me to the Technical Support Center who would help me. Now I have Miss.Jenniffer on line. “Miss. Jenniffer, Are you there?” Mr.Frank screamed. After few tries, I heard Miss.Jenniffer’s voice. This girl is in Madras, she did not tell me her real name, in her curiosity to help me out. She asked me how I would like to receive the correspondences from HP. “Hey Miss.Jenniffer, I did not call you to get correspondences from HP, but to fix my warranty problem” I told her. “I’m glad to help you.” she said. I gave my name, address and the phone number. “Unfortunately I can’t help you. Call this numbers to get help. 1-800-374-5828 or 1-800-474-6836”. I called the number, this time Mr.James on line, he verified all my details and said in his action “go figure”. No answer for 5 minutes, and I have the phone fixed to my ear, finally said to myself “this is a waste of time talking to these guys”.

Now, the numbers to call to fix your Laptop Warranty issue:

1-800-365-8406
1-800-374-5828
1-800-474-6836
1-800-633-3600

And one support guy gave me this number also, 1-800-615-3572. You may get to the Whirlpool if you call that number.

Hey HP, fix your India office and get my warranty corrected, please! I still love your products!
